Sumario: | Homicide is a serious global public health issue. The current chapter overviews homicide trends cross-nationally, focusing on recent global homicide patterns from 1990 to 2020 using data from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the World Health Organization (WHO). We show a sizeable global reduction in homicide rates globally since 1990; however, for much of the world, homicide rates either stabilized or began an upward trend between 2018 and 2020. Our data suggest that all regions of the world have lower levels of homicide in 2020 compared to the 1990s. However, there is some variation in the magnitude and timing of homicide declines across regions. We find similar trends when comparing homicide data from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) with data from the WHO. The UNODC data provide broader coverage regarding the total number of countries included and contain slightly higher homicide levels. Trends over time, however, are very similar across sources for most regions. We find preliminary evidence that the substantial homicide declines which has benefited much of the world since the 1990s may be losing momentum, with upticks in homicides in some regions that warrant caution in light of heightened tensions in recent years. We conclude by discussing the implications of the results for future research on comparative homicide trends. |
