| Sumario: | During this period of the 21st century the profession of policing in America is grappling with a pandemic within a pandemic - the Covid pandemic raging alongside the pandemic of systemic and institutionalised racism. The historic harms that continue to emerge from past policies and practices have had a traumatising effect on many members of the present-day public. Due to its vicarious nature, it is being felt by those within the law enforcement community. Considering the history of disparate service delivery, coupled with the contemporary convergence of natural and man-made disasters and disorder due to public distrust and dissent, where does the profession of policing go from here? More importantly, how do we get there? How do the crises in communities and in policing affect the policing of crises? These questions are contextualised, and a pathway forward is presented. Notable implications are shared relative to future research, intentional actions, and the need for wise leadership on behalf of stakeholders at the communal, organisational, and institutional levels. |
