| Zusammenfassung: | This paper integrates cultivation theory and moral panics to create hypotheses about the effects of cable network news consumption (CNN. Fox News, MSNBC) on three measures of fear of crime. The study uses the 2015 Chapman University Study of American Fear. The analysis is a block model process OLS multiple regression with imputed missing values for independent variables. Net of significant controls, frequency of Fox News viewership is positively associated with fear of stranger and known offender violent crime, and property crime. National network news consumption also shows positive effects. There are no effects for CNN, MSNBC, nor local news, true crime TV, and TV crime dramas. Implications for theory and future research are discussed. |
