Description
Summary:While the number of executions in the US is declining, implementation of the death penalty remains flawed. Research suggests that for every eight people executed, one person on death row has been exonerated. Yet there is limited comprehensive knowledge of exoneration research in capital cases. Through a systematic and comprehensive analysis and synthesis of scholarly articles published in English-language journals, our scoping review helps fill this gap. The review is guided by the following questions: (1) How is research on exoneration in capital cases designed and executed? (2) What are the major findings addressed in this body of literature? (3) How does scholarship represent death row exonerees’ experiences? (4) What are emerging trends in investigations of exoneration in capital cases? (5) What are the implications/policy recommendations provided by current literature on death row exonerations? We conclude with suggestions for future research.
