However, despite the high crime rate, tourism has emerged as the major engine of economic growth in the Caribbean and globally. Although, there are concerns over the safety of tourists have become paramount in certain regions of the world that have not dissuaded the traveling public. Unfortunately, the Caribbean has fallen in this category, with the rising crime rate, and political instability in some islands. This chapter focuses on the history of tourism in specific Caribbean islands (Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago, and Saint Kitts & Nevis), the safety of tourists in identified Caribbean destinations, the categorization of certain Caribbean territories by the Global Peace Index (GPI), and United States Department State. It further highlights the perception of tourists of the Caribbean as a safe destination, victimization experienced by visitors, and the contribution of tourism to the Caribbean gross domestic product (GDP). The chapter concludes with a number of measures to enhance the safety of tourists.
