Zusammenfassung:Across the North-West geopolitical zone of Nigeria, colonies of cattle rustlers and bandits dot the landscape, inflicting terror, destruction, and displacement in rural communities. This chapter, therefore, examines the nature of cattle rustling and banditry, as well as some of the measures undertaken by state and non-state actors to tackle the twin menace. It argues that the operational audacity of cattle rustlers and bandits, the sophisticated nature of small arms and light weapons (SALWs) in their possession, and the devastating effects of their activities on lives and livelihoods have made these organized crimes serious tremors shaking the socio-economic and security foundation of northern Nigeria, especially the North-West zone. Armed with lethal weapons, these criminals have been diversifying into highway robbery, kidnapping for ransom, and racketeering in natural resources. The chapter further interrogates the successes and setbacks of measures adopted to combat these violent crimes such as deployment of military force, activation of special police operations, banning of illegal mining, and adoption of legislative resolutions. Others are the initiation of peace accords and amnesty, engagement in transborder security cooperation, activation of community vigilantes, and convening of community dialogue. It concludes that these interventions have not brought durable peace in the region, demanding that a holistic response to insecurity in the region is needed. It proffers some actionable recommendations to tackle the twin menace.
