520 |a The use of technology in community corrections has been steadily advancing for over 50 years. It has expanded in geographic coverage to nearly every region across the world, been adopted for use at all stages of the criminal legal system, and new technologies continue to be brought to market for the purpose of monitoring justice-involved people under community supervision. In this chapter, we provide a brief overview of the use of technology in a selection of the community corrections systems included in this volume. Across these systems, electronic monitoring (EM) is particularly common in both probation and parole systems. We use EM as a case study to illustrate how technologies develop, proliferate, and adapt for use within community corrections systems around the world. We conclude by discussing the ethics of EM use and its broader implications for the implementation of new technologies in community corrections.
