Sumario:Since its introduction into legislative provision in the late 19th century, probation in England and Wales has undergone considerable changes in both its organization and the practices underpinning its work with those under its supervision. This is certainly a feature of probation at present in England and Wales as the newly unified Probation Service seeks to re-build and re-assert itself after the failure of the Transforming Rehabilitation reforms that split probation services along the lines of risk. In this chapter, the authors trace the key developments that have shaped probation in England and Wales and outline the current organizational structures and staffing before discussing the challenges facing the organization.
