| Zusammenfassung: | The majority of police encounters with the public do not result in an assault of an officer, but some encounters can place a member of the police in a situation where they are exposed to individuals who may become violent. However, police forces around the world have experienced an increase in the number of assaults on police officers; in some cases, this has been more than 25% since 2019. This research is based on an extensive literature review to examine the reasons for, and the drivers of, assaults on police officers. It found that the reasons for its occurrence are complex. Assaults can occur in any police encounter with the public, although there are certain locations and incident types where the risk of being assaulted increases. These risks include incidents where the assailant has consumed alcohol, been convicted of previous violent offences and where there is a direct challenge to the authority of an officer. The review was limited by the fact that the topic has not been extensively researched and that some of the literature is dated. These limitations highlight that there are a number of potential areas of future research. |
