Sumario:Armed banditry is a threat to the human security architecture in Nigeria. However, there has been little or no exploratory research into the reactionary measures of Nigerian state against this milieu. Hence, this chapter aims to fill the gaps and answers the basic questions: What are the underlying internal causes of armed banditry in Nigeria? To what extent has Nigerian state waged war against armed banditry? What are the driving forces and humanitarian consequences in the face of armed banditry in Nigeria? How can the impact of armed banditry be subdued on human security threats in Nigeria? Using secondary data sources, this chapter examines the causal factors of armed banditry within Nigeria’s landscape. It reviews the extant literature with a view to explicating responses of Nigerian government towards armed banditry in Nigeria. It also underlines the strengths and the weaknesses of Nigerian government in tackling armed banditry. Some of its findings are that armed banditry is a menace to human and economic livelihood of the people, especially across Northern regions in Nigeria. On the one hand, the armed banditry is a resultant effect of poor exercise of governmental control over ungoverned space especially in the North-West and North-Central regions. On the other hand, ethno-religious crisis, illegal migration, and arms proliferation amplify the multi-dimensional nature of armed banditry in Nigeria. This chapter concludes that internal security architecture should be strengthened to uproot causal factors of armed banditry in Nigeria.
