Zusammenfassung:This study estimates the dose-response relationship between the time spent in an intensive, therapeutic treatment program during juvenile incarceration and juvenile homicide offenders’ odds of recidivism. Using a Risk-Need-Responsivity model framework, eligibility for and assignment to this program, as well as associated program outcomes, are examined. A propensity score matching approach is used to determine the treatment effect of varied doses of this program on recidivism. Analyses reveal that, compared to non-participants, program participants who received any dose or a weak dose of this program exhibit reduced likelihood of felony-level recidivism as measured by post-release arrest. Those who received a stronger dose of treatment are significantly less likely to be arrested for any offense or for a violent felony during the three years following release than those who received no treatment or a weak dose. This effect of a strong dose holds true for both recidivism outcomes – any new arrest and any new felony arrest. The efficacy of the Violent Offender Treatment Program (VOTP) provides evidence that, when provided via an appropriately intensive dose, lasting rehabilitation of juvenile homicide offenders is feasible within the venue of juvenile incarceration.
