| Zusammenfassung: | Utilizing the conceptual tools of popular criminology (Kohm, 2017) we explore crime and justice in Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The games follow Peter Parker’s protégé as he develops his powers and takes up the mantle of Spider-Man: a vigilante delivering justice from outside the system. As a young Afro-Latino in Harlem, Miles both polices his own community, while serving their needs through the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man App. He is hunted by Roxxon’s militarized security forces, as he navigates the fight between the Roxxon corporation and The Underground: a destructive protest group. We analyze how the games represent issues of vigilante justice, community responsibility, technologically mediated policing, as well as the corporatization and militarization of security. We analyze how gameplay positions us in and with Miles, as a racialized youth and vigilante, and how that position brings greater focus to these contemporary dilemmas of justice. |
