| Zusammenfassung: | Falsified COVID-19 vaccination certificates, or passes, have become both a tool for overcoming obstacles and a symbol of deviant resistance. Similar to the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, which featured offers for both bogus testing kits and vaccines, the emergence of fake vaccination certificates is an illicit supply generated by a demand entailed by restrictions on the right to free self-realization, both in terms of freedom of movement and related intangible aspects such as ideological stances. To better understand the media discourses surrounding the dissemination and use of fake COVID-19 vaccine certificates, we present a critical assessment of (N = 237) news stories from 2021 to 2022 published in international media outlets. The article explores how affected agents construct the reality of the use of fake vaccine certificates and shape the social discourse around such deviant behavior as it relates to attaining certainty in the midst of particularly uncertain circumstances. |
