Summary:This chapter looks at the phenomenon of football fandom and its violent manifestations through the lens of the pride and shame dynamics. More precisely, it explores this persistent, disturbing, yet widespread social phenomenon by drawing from James Gilligan’s and Carol Gilligan’s insights on the relationship between shame and violence, in particular the emphasis on feelings of disrespect. By extrapolating emotions on the social level, this chapter addresses the sense of humiliation experienced by those who feel that the core of their collective identity is being seen as inferior and subject to contempt, as well as the attempt to restore pride by resorting to violence. To do so, this chapter examines the case of PAOK F.C., a popular football fan club situated in Northern Greece. It looks at how the human geography of PAOK F.C. fans maps onto the turbulent history and collective memory of the city of Thessaloniki, at how these social traumas are translated in a collective moral experience of shame and subsequently form the basis of a subaltern identity echoed in the ideology and mentality underpinning the fans’ identification with their favourite football team. In dissecting PAOK’s ideology, this chapter identifies and explores three different dimensions of experiencing shame and expressing violence as the restorative mechanism of pride and collective self-esteem in the football fandom context: the historical, the socio-political and the gender-based.
