| 520 | |a This special issue presents a collection of papers, based on a conference held in Rome in September 2015. It was the final conference organized by the Global Dynamics of Extortion Racket Systems (GLODERS) research project. GLODERS was directed towards utilizing information technology for the development of simulation models for the understanding of a specific aspect of the global financial system: extortion racketeering. The objective of the conference however, was broader, studying the social aspects of organized crime in general. The conference brought together academics, police officers, legal practitioners and operational specialists for providing scientific evidence to support policy-making and collective engagement. This special issue will allow us to share our new knowledge with an international and interdisciplinary audience. Whilst the focus of GLODERS was on computational approaches to extortion racket systems, the conference resulted from an open Call for Papers and became a highly interdisciplinary event, mirrored in the papers presented here. Contributions shed light on diverse aspects of the interpenetration of the legal and illegal worlds, exploring various methodological, theoretical and conceptual approaches. We hope that the readers will benefit as much as the participants of the conference from the insights provided by the various talks and discussions.
