Sumario:Part of a special issue on immigration and boundary policing in an era of globalization. The writer discusses boundary and immigration enforcement along the U.S.-Mexican border in an age of intensifying globalization. He summarizes and critiques the various explanations for the remarkable increase in U.S. federal government efforts, beginning in the 1990s, to enhance the effectiveness of U.S.-Mexico border enforcement and to reduce illegal immigration. Furthermore, he examines how these developments constitute part of an age of globalization that is purported to be making national boundaries things of the past.
