Zusammenfassung:Part of a special section on globalization and environmental harm. It is argued that sustainability as an epithet as understood in the public arena and by many development agencies is too loaded to be of any practical or authentic use. Alternative forms of class/capital-conscious sustainability are examined. The origins and associations of sustainability are explored in a discursive manner, with a European emphasis, and the extent to which the term underpins the status quo in the current ideological landscape is delineated.
