Sumario: | Part of a special issue on the relationship between art, identity, and social justice. In San Francisco, California, as elsewhere in the U.S., the prevalence of disease and injuries and the avoidable lost years of life depend on the community to which a person belongs. In order to promote healing and prevention within communities, it is necessary to understand the root causes of social injustice and realize the power of community members to effect change. Community art has a role to play in this context because it can bring communities together, dispel ignorance and fear, and generate trust. To bring this about, San Francisco should employ community artists for extended periods of time using the 1930s Work Progress Administration model. |
