| Sumario: | The article discusses obstacles to the development of research in crime and delinquency. The author's plea is for interdisciplinary research involving biology, psychology, sociology, and other social sciences. This must be an Organism x Environment model as it has been developed. The environment is a physical environment made up of geographical features. Social structure exists only as the interaction of human beings, which is physical and which is made possible by the human brain and the ability to create symbols and use language. One cannot understand human interaction and human behavior without understanding neural networks and neurotransmitter systems. The physical environment includes the human-made environment, including buildings and libraries and automobiles and television sets. These are a product of the human brain and the plasticity of the brain. All environmental experiences enter the individual through the brain. In turn, the brain codes, organizes, and responds to such environmental input by way of the motor system and behavior. Behavior is controlled by the brain, and without an understanding of the brain, people have no way of understanding behavior. Sociologists use a mind/matter dualism or mental states that control physical behavior. That is the reason all of the articles discussed above have such a problem with the question of how the individual interacts with the environment |
