Summary:This paper outlines the possible routes of access to public sector housing for offenders released from prison. The authors argue that the Housing Act 1985, Part III, and the Children Act 1989, Part III, provide a legislative framework which may well be wide enough to accommodate applications from homeless ex-offenders. The results of this empirical survey of local authority housing departments showed, however, that many local authorities do not interpret the legislation with a positive emphasis in favour of homeless offenders
