Description
Summary:Based on ethnographic research conducted in and around a penal compound in Northeast Brazil, this chapter describes how a low-income, heavily penalized neighbourhood, Mata Escura, emerged in conjunction with the construction and expansion of the state’s largest penal compound. For example, formerly imprisoned people and prison visitors have contributed to the emergence of Mata Escura by settling in the vicinity of the compound. The chapter documents various material flows and symbolic linkages that connect neighbourhood and prison, arguing that Mata Escura and the penal compound are productively understood as a single carceral form and an instantiation of a more general phenomenon: the prison-neighbourhood nexus in the age of hyperincarceration.
