| Summary: | On 1 October 2017, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) confronted the deadliest mass shooting in modern United States history. Between 10:05 p.m. and 10:15 p.m., gunfire from a 32nd-floor hotel suite killed 60 and injured more than 800 people in a crowd of more than 22,000 concert attendees on the Las Vegas Strip. As LVMPD and hotel security officers responded to the scene, the shooter took his own life, leaving few, if any, clues to explain his motives. Years-long after-action reviews offer detailed assessments of the incident and outline successes and shortcomings in event preparation and incident response. These assessments provide recommendations to improve event safety and, should such an event happen again, future mass shooting incident response. We summarise the lessons learned and offer a framework for approaching mass shooting prevention and response. Sheriff Lombardo, who led the LVMPD during and after the mass shooting, reflects on his experiences and the impact of this extraordinary crisis. We offer insights to better prepare communities and first responders who face the ‘new normal’ of responding to our world’s next mass shooting. |
