| Summary: | China has seen an intensive adoption of technology in policing over recent years. The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) enjoys an increasing profile in various scenarios of emergency policing for its unique features of being non-contact, efficient, and multi-functional. During the Covid-19 pandemic, UAVs have been employed to make broadcasts, deliver goods, assist street patrol, investigate crimes, etc. Police departments are absorbing UAVs into their force by training operators and systematically integrating UAVs into crime prevention programmes. The traditional route of police practice has been reshaped by the new technology. Nevertheless, concerns are also raised. The UAVs, following CCTVs and body-worn cameras, would pose a challenge towards citizen privacy. From the policing ethic, reliance on UAVs might result in impassive enforcement and alienate the police from the mass. Moreover, the uncontrollable factors of new technology would trigger more complicated issues for police accountability. The update in legal and regulatory framework of UAVs and related technologies used in emergency policing is a pressing matter of the moment. |
