| Summary: | This essay summarises the later work of sociologist and politician Nando dalla Chiesa (Florence 1949-). Drawing on classical and recent scholarship, it traces the development of ’Ndrangheta organisations from their origin to their current forms, in Europe and beyond. Central to his analysis are the various nuances of this peculiar form of aggressive migration, which he conceptualises as a form of colonisation. He also describes its entrepreneurial dimensions, such as taking advantage of “emergency” situations such as natural calamities and the recent pandemic, and the cunningness of taking advantage of the sentiment of the loyalty of Calabrians abroad, who, perhaps more easily than others, offer their services to fellow compatriots in goodwill and often end up becoming accomplices. With the use of maps, he illustrates the presence of the ’Ndrangheta in Northern Italy and Europe to visually warn policymakers and the public of the threat of what he calls removal - that is, oblivion and ignorance towards the existence of the mafia phenomenon in its various developments. In fact, as in all his work, dalla Chiesa stresses that cultural awareness remains one of the most important tools, if not the premise, in countering the opportunistic and violent advance of organised crime. |
