Description
Summary:The actions of Giuseppe Diana (4 July 1958 Casal di Principe-19 March 1994 Casal di Principe) were essential for the consolidation of the Catholic Church’s anti-mafia position in the early 1990s. Don Diana lived his life at the heart of a stronghold of the Camorra, Casal di Principe. In those years, the Casalese clan was at its most powerful and controlled much of the legal and illegal economy of the area. Don Diana’s activism consisted in offering help to victims of intimidation, extortion and bullying, encouraging resistance in everyday life in Casale and providing safe recreational spaces for young people. On Christmas Day in 1991, his committee distributed a manifesto entitled “For the love of my people” in all churches in Casale di Principe and the Aversa, on a day when all churches were full, also including those of Camorristi. The manifesto shook, frightened and offended the local population for its direct language: Rarely was the Camorra spoken of, and to, so clearly. Until then, the few forms of opposition used legal and political jargon. Never were they spoken, let alone written, in religious terms. This way, not only was the entire Catholic population addressed in this fashion, but also the Church was also held accountable for its shortcomings.
