Description
Summary:In the Mafia Kingdom is a pamphlet essay published in 1900 that had a certain political influence. It was written by Napoleone Colajanni, an eminent republican politician and key figure in the cultural and political history of Italy and Sicily. Several of the more radical streams of thought on the mafia phenomenon emerge in this work. One of the first striking ideas is certainly its presentation of the mafia as a form of defensive justice drawn on by the weakest members of society. The second point for reflection, however, shows the precariousness of Colajanni’s own interpretative framework. The very condemnation of the government’s behaviour and responsibility for its inability to provide good administration and honest police and its permanent determination to repress all liberty and social justice movements with blood bring the author to emphatically maintain that the true mafia government is in Rome. The third point for reflection concerns the historical responsibilities of the left in strengthening the mafia’s presence in the political institutions and the administration. What emerges is all the autonomy of the thought and action of the intellectual agitator, the moral density of the political commitment of an incorruptible republican leader.
