| Zusammenfassung: | Facilitating and enforcing: police experiences and the role of interactions and framing in demonstrations This article focuses on how police officers in the Netherlands experience the contemporary dynamics of demonstrations. Following Van Stekelenburg, the author notes three recent developments in the protest landscape and briefly discusses the legal framework and police powers. Based on ethnographic fieldwork, including observations and interviews throughout the Netherlands, she studies how officers experience demonstrations, how they experience their interactions with protesters, and the impact this has on their work and well-being. The focus is on two key challenges: (1) the interactions and relationships between police and protesters, and (2) the impact of framing of police actions, notably on social media. The article provides insight into the mental pressures, police legitimacy, and sense of (in)justice experienced by officers. |
