RT Article T1 Illegal trafficking of wood JF Forensic botany SP 176 OP 184 A1 Coyle, Heather Miller LA English YR 2025 UL https://krimdok.uni-tuebingen.de/Record/1939429196 AB Biodiversity refers to the wealth of different species identified or co-existing in an environmental space. Scientists measure biodiversity by the number and quantity of different species that can be sampled and identified. In areas that have experienced heavy environmental destruction through natural disasters or human activity, the consequences can be severe. 1 , 2 Loss of biodiversity means our global resources for genetics and speciation, and resources for housing or medicines are forever altered. There are several different management strategies for maintaining biodiversity. 3–5 Some of these strategies include: (i) seed banks to collect and store genetic variation from species of interest, (ii) legislation and policy to restrict access and harvesting of different species, (iii) maintenance strategies to harvest and replenish genetic species pools as a continued resource, and (iv) breeding programs to expand levels of genetic diversity within a population as a tool to increase survival by incorporating hybrid vigor.
