520 |a Between 2011 and 2016, the Netherlands were confronted with a fast growth of the outlaw motorcycle gang (OMCG) subculture. On theoretical grounds, such rapid expansion is expected to go hand-in-hand with radicalization of the outlaw biker milieu and OMCG members' increased involvement in organized crime. Expansion is also expected to increase interclub rivalry, fueling further radicalization, enticing clubs to open their membership to individuals otherwise attracted to OMCG membership than by a love for motorcycling. As a partial test of these expectations, the current chapter examines the nature of the crimes committed by OMCG and support club members, and explores the extent to which different crime types cluster within individual members' criminal histories, signaling distinct criminal career types. Dutch OMCGs are then compared with regard to the level and nature of criminal involvement of their members and office-bearers, and the distribution of different criminal career types within their membership. Results show that distinct criminal career types can be distinguished among OMCG and support club members, and that the nature of these criminal career types differs between these subpopulations. One in three OMCG members shows a criminal career type taken to be indicative of radical sentiments. Among support club members, a violent criminal career type can be distinguished. In line with previous theorizing, the proportion of members showing more radical criminal careers is largest in clubs that went through a period of rapid growth.
