Zusammenfassung:Among Nigel's earliest writings were his studies on the emergence of private security. He was concerned, in particular, with the transition from private security to the private policing of public space and the resulting problem of the legitimacy of private force. This chapter traces the main lines of his argument expounded in his 1988 book Policing for Profit and his later 1997 chapter “Control, Crime and ‘End of Century Criminology’” and seeks both to update his discussion and to confront some of the issues raised by subsequent developments in the policing activities of private security.
