Zusammenfassung:This article examines the use of noise ordinance by-laws to illegalize and issue costly fines against demonstrators who have used megaphones to amplify their dissent and resistance to the continued bombardment, occupation, and apartheid in Palestine during protests in Ottawa - Canada’s capital city. It also explores the possibilities and limits of extra-academic engagement through an analysis of a campaign and zine calling for the abolition of noise ordinance by-laws involving the Criminalization and Punishment Education Project - an action research group - in support of these efforts. In interrogating the process involved in and narratives produced through the campaign and zine project, this paper highlights the amplified words subject to by-law fines, the impact these sanctions had on megaphone users and within the activist community, as well as what targeted demonstrators would like to see happen both in Ottawa in response to the attempted sonic silencing of political dissent and in Palestine where genocidal violence continues. In so doing, the paper highlights the value of abolitionist criminological interventions that entail collective struggle and advocacy with the oppressed and antagonism against rather than complicity with the carceral state.
