Description
Summary:As with all other world societies, Caribbean societies are evolving to adapt to the twenty-first century concomitant with embracing their independence from their colonial past. Caribbean criminal judicial systems are not exempted from this evolution. With a focus on combatting crime, rapid advances in technology and the need to approach the disposition of criminal matters from perspectives that depart from the traditional, there have been several initiatives in the criminal judicial landscape to meet these challenges. These initiatives aim to achieve a more equitable and just outcome in criminal matters whilst safeguarding the rights of offenders, embracing the voice of victims, emphasizing rehabilitation and preserving the peace and good order of society. This chapter examines some of the territories in the English-speaking Caribbean and the reforms implemented in the criminal judicial system to decrease backlogs, address juvenile offending, drug addiction, violent crime, domestic and sexual abuse crimes, extend the role of victims in the disposition of criminal matters and move towards a Caribbean jurisprudence.
