This chapter addresses the developmental science that underlies distinctions inherent to this age group and explains the current representation of young adults in the legal system. The chapter provides an overview of diversion programs designed to incorporate developmental research, which are being increasingly implemented in the United States. It highlights a case study of a novel young adult court in Southern California, which aims to reduce the collateral consequences of felony convictions. The chapter concludes with policy implications and future directions in both research and practice to improve the lives of young adults in the legal system.
