Additionally, podcast consumer data suggest that true crime podcasts are popular with women. Despite this prominence, limited research examines how women engage with true crime podcasts and the impact of these podcasts on women’s sense of safety. At the same time, there is limited work which explores methodological questions about how to examine women’s listening experiences. This chapter examines the empirical and ethical benefits of using the qualitative solicited diary method in empirical investigations into women’s listening experiences. It has a particular focus on how these reflective methods can generate insight into whether engaging with true crime podcasts shapes women’s sense of safety and understandings of crime, violence, or the criminal legal system. The chapter outlines solicited diary methods and identifies the four benefits of these methods for examining women’s experiences of listening to podcasts focused on violence against women: their ability to capture in-depth emotion; to direct attention to participants’ everyday experiences; to record responses to a wider array of podcasts; and to prioritise participant agency.
