Description
Summary:The Violence Against Women and Children Desk officers at the level of the barangay (village), who work directly with communities, are mandated to provide grassroots protection for women victims/survivors. They are the initial points of contact and first responders in violence against women and children and are tasked with initiating the inter-agency and multidisciplinary process of interventions established by law. However, the Violence Against Women and Children Desk officers’ perceptions of their work colour the ways in which they treat, offer support, and intervene in cases of violence, and these perceptions are often communicated in their interactions with women victim/survivors. By drawing on interviews conducted with 19 Violence Against Women and Children Desk officers from various barangays in the National Capital Region, Philippines, this chapter examines the operant schema frontline service providers utilise to better understand the world and their work. The chapter also identifies ways in which existing interventions and support structures can be strengthened and new ones devised so that the safety and security of women in the Philippines, their families, and their communities are enhanced.
