520 |a The plague of armed banditry in Nigeria’s northwest region, which is characterised by high levels of poverty, inequality, unemployment, and illiteracy, to mention a few, has resulted in the deaths of thousands and the displacement of several others. In 2021 alone, the nefarious activities of armed bandits, which include kidnappings for ransom, mass killings, thefts, cattle rustling, extortion and exploitation, sexual violence against women and girls, amongst others, had claimed the lives of over 2600 people and led to the forced displacement of more than 57,000 people and 15,000 refugees in neighbouring Madari and Yahoua regions of Niger Republic. The situation on the ground is further complicated by worsening food insecurity, given the effects of bandits’ attacks on farmers in their farmlands, thereby affecting agricultural productivity. Despite these, the peculiarity of the unfolding humanitarian crisis in the troubled region has received little academic attention. Drawing on secondary sources of data obtained from reports, books, journals, and reputable local and international news sources, this chapter foregrounds the need to address this gap. The chapter’s central argument is found in its postulation that, left unaddressed, the region’s enduring humanitarian crisis could potentially engulf Nigeria’s wider northern region and neighbouring states in the Lake Chad Basin region, with dire consequences for Nigeria’s national security and regional peace and security.
