RT Article T1 The serial murder phenomenon half a century on JF Routledge handbook of homicide studies SP 235 OP 269 A1 Yaksic, Enzo LA English YR 2024 UL https://krimdok.uni-tuebingen.de/Record/1924758431 AB This chapter examines serial murder, a phenomenon that has become cultural feature and entertainment, introduces new ideas, and discusses shortcomings alongside promising avenues for research. It highlights tensions between academic theories, data, and applied experiences. Despite important innovation and research initiatives, the trite, old guard stance about the serial murderer profile will be the standard, a mainstay on television programs featuring self-proclaimed experts. It is appropriate to ask if our responsibility is to operationalize our knowledge about serial murder no matter the cost or repercussions. When our overarching goal is advancing ourselves, we place potential victims at a disadvantage. We must reverse course and hold ourselves accountable by creating and adhering to an ethical code of conduct when dealing with such sensitive matters.
