520 |a Justice-involved youth often present addiction problems to one or more psychoactive substances. Inversely, youth undergoing addiction treatment have already committed one or many offences and many have been involved in the justice system. Although addiction recovery and desistance from crime are not identical processes, they share several similarities and are interdependent. The purpose of this chapter is to describe and understand how justice-involved youth perceive the role of addiction services and counsellors in terms of their addiction recovery and their desistance from crime. A thematic analysis involving qualitative interviews with 57 justice-involved youth between the ages of 16 and 35 was carried out. The participants talked about the positive impact of the organization of addiction services and of addiction counsellors on their substance use and criminal trajectories in terms of the cognitive but also the relational, social, and identity-related aspects of their lives. Links with several concepts of desistance from crime are addressed. Ultimately, addiction counsellors indirectly act as desistance agents and are therefore important allies to be considered by the justice system and correctional services.
