RT Article T1 "Rape kills the soul": the use of sexual violence by state and non-state actors in war and conflict JF Demystifying power, crime and social harm SP 351 OP 377 A1 Fitzpatrick, Brenda LA English YR 2023 UL https://krimdok.uni-tuebingen.de/Record/1916601855 AB Key elements of Steven Box’s analysis in Power, Crime and Mystification [PCM] regarding crimes of rape in 1983 are applicable to understanding tactical rape and sexual violence in conflict today. This current work examines the nature, motivation, impact and use of rape as a weapon and tactic of war. It aims to demystify power brokers who frequently avoid accountability despite being the hidden perpetrators of these egregious crimes. It highlights how the international community including states, politicians, military and societal leaders have eventually been forced to respond and the progress made in International Humanitarian Law. It shows how legal bases and definitions have come into being to support judicial and organisational responses aimed at prevention, prohibition and prosecution of perpetrators. It references the complex nature of rape and coercion. Finally, it also notes the ongoing use of tactical rape in conflicts such as that in Ukraine.
