The centrality of police institutional violence and intrinsic racism to the operation of policing is evidenced through reference to the continuum of abuses experienced by those deemed ‘enemies within’, from harassment and surveillance through to police institutional killings. The chapter argues that racist violence is a core aspect of policing, and that both this violence and the official discourse which surround it represent the continuation of historical approaches which aim to dismiss, dehumanise and deny the experiences of those killed by the police, through processes of mystification. The work outlines how contemporary technology may begin to fracture this mystification, yet it also asks questions about technology’s ability to challenge policing as an institution. It argues that the complete deconstruction of the mystificatory architecture surrounding police requires a critical engagement with the very nature of the state and the social, political, economic and cultural place that the structural violence of policing occupies. | ||
