Consequently, the study examined the impact of vigilante groups on crime management in contemporary Nigeria with particular attention to Ahoada East local government area of Rivers State. It employed mixed methods using questionnaire and interview to elicit data from random and purposively sample 240 members of households and 8 interviewed key informants. The study triangulated theoretically by the adoption of broken windows and social contract theories and findings was presented in tabular form and percentage. The findings reveal that, the rising level of crimes and insecurity consequent upon weak police counter-strategies within the context of yearly progressive rise in financial allocation to the security sub-sector account for the proliferation of community organized self-defense groups and that vigilante is a reliable option for integration into Nigeria’s security architecture given the complexities of contemporary crimes in towns and rural communities. The study recommended among others that vigilante group activities should be encouraged and assisted with adequate training and sufficient funding but must operate within ambient of the law.
