It is expected that the police should achieve this by preventing crime through prior detection, and effective investigation where criminal activities have been committed, which facilitates delivery of justice. However, in Kenya like other third world countries, the attainment of these roles has not been fully successful due to several factors. This paper explores in detail these challenges facing the police in post-independence Kenya by reviewing literatures and examines how such problems have negatively affected the police in their core functions. The paper concludes with suggestions on what can be done to achieve effective policing which in the end will control insecurity in the country.
