AB The chapter approaches the ‘torture debate’ from the viewpoint of social imaginaries of torture. This approach is used to grasp how torture can still be presented as a continuum that ranges from its utter condemnation to viewing it as a necessity for gaining so called actionable intelligence. Mass cultural representations of torture are part of how people remember what has happened in the past, and contribute to how torture techniques are retained and learned. Specifically, the chapter views two ‘docudrama’ films (Zero Dark Thirty and The Report) that present opposing views on the effectiveness of torture. The films highlight the relationship between truth and torture. The Report also displays how the torture imaginary can be contested.
