|a This study was the second in a series of surveys commissioned by Virginia Slims. The first survey conducted in 1970 dealt with women's perceptions of their roles and status in American society. The present study focused on women's views of their own presence in political and economic life, and men's views of women with respect to the same issues. Four different samples were interviewed for this study: two women's samples comprising 2,009 respondents, and two mixed samples totaling 2,011 respondents. Questions probed respondents' attitudes toward women's changing status, discrimination against women, women's liberation groups, women in politics, and female politicians versus male politicians and their handling of various situations. Respondents were also asked about their partisan preferences, problems confronting the nation, their attitudes toward investments, borrowing, and saving, and other social and economic issues. Demographic data include age group, race, sex, marital status, number of minor children, religion, level of education, and 1970 family income. The data were obtained from the Institute for Research in Social Science at the University of North Carolina.
