The data consist of county-level returns for selected primary and general elections contested in 11 southern states (Virginia, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, and Tennessee) from 1944-1972. Data are provided for raw vote totals for candidates in presidential, gubernatorial, and senatorial elections, as well as for selected popular referenda returns in this period. In addition, there are variables that describe the demographic and geographic nature of each county included in this study.
