Summary:This contribution revisits our earlier research on immigrant beach selling. Self-reflexively and critically analysing the theoretical as well as ideological underpinnings of earlier research efforts into this phenomenon, this contribution now recognizes how this research, conducted during the 1990s, could be seen as part of the social and political struggle over definitions of the phenomenon itself. More precisely its sub text was concerned with the following dilemma: was there more to be feared from the harm caused by the problem of illegal selling itself or from the dangers of ill considered reactions to this behaviour? Revisiting the original research data sets the contribution at hand attempts to shed light on alternative interpretations.
