520 |a The chapters of this book examine the different dynamics of violence toward animals and interpersonal violence through the lens of psycho-criminology. The book unites scholars from six countries and regions (the United States, the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands, Turkey, and Hong Kong). It draws on their expertise and knowledge of their local contexts to contribute to a broader understanding of animal abuse, its relationship with interpersonal violence, and the psycho-criminological mechanisms (personal, social, and environmental influences) that may underlie this relationship. Animal abuse may lead to interpersonal violence, and violent crimes should be prosecuted. While enforcement and punishment are critical for fighting cruelty to animals, it is equally important to address animal abuse through education, behavioral and attitudinal changes, and legislative reforms. To prevent animal abuse, we must alter the attitudes of pet owners and others who handle, care for, and otherwise interact with animals. Campaigns should aim to increase awareness that animal abuse is a criminal offense; to encourage people to report cases of animal abuse; and most importantly, to communicate the message that nonhuman beings are sentient beings with full awareness of their feelings and emotions and the subjective capacity to feel pain and pleasure.
