Substance abuse and animal maltreatment: an overlooked opportunity for intervention?

Little attention has been paid to the mental health issues and behavioral correlates of those who engage in animal maltreatment even though elucidating these factors may inform treatment of those who perpetrate it. Identifying these factors is of particular importance given the lack of empirically s...

Identifying these factors is of particular importance given the lack of empirically supported interventions for animal maltreatment offenders. One area that has emerged as likely correlated with animal maltreatment is substance abuse. This chapter explores the extant research implicating substance intoxication and dependence to the deliberate harm of animals. It explores the theoretical explanations for the apparent link between substance abuse and animal maltreatment, including the generalized deviance hypothesis as well as a tendency toward impulsivity and self-control deficits. Additionally, the relationship between child maltreatment and substance abuse is explored with particular attention to the aspects of the relationship that may apply to animal maltreatment. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the implications of the apparent relationship between animal maltreatment and substance abuse for researchers and practitioners, such as screening for substance abuse issues when evaluating animal maltreatment offenders and mandating substance abuse treatment when appropriate.
