| 520 | |a This paper seeks to demonstrate that the social origins of violence in the settlements of the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires (AMBA) are not related to a specific way of life of the popular sectors, but to the type of relation established between them and the State (and the co - constitution of socio - political life). The article addresses the patterns in which the State in the margins builds and rebuilds itself permanently, showing that in these locations we can see prominently its ubiquity, reinforcing different forms of “statality”. Particularly, the focus is set on the display of the punitive state as the right to security of the inhabitants of these settlements is not guaranteed. Moreover, we avoid generalizations which indicate that these types of neighborhoods are violent by revealing their differences and nuances, as well as the role of mass media in stigmatizing and associating them with crime. The methodology used in this document is based on field notes of different research projects in informal settlements (1986-2015) of the AMBA and interviews with their inhabitants, who spontaneously narrated the state of security in their neighborhoods. I also resort to mass media in the written press on this subject.El artículo quiere demostrar que la sociogénesis de la violencia en los asentameintos del Area Metropolitana de Buenos Aires (AMBA) no se vincula a una forma de vida particular de los sectores populares, sino a un modo de relación del Estado con estos grupos (y la co-construcción de la vida socio-politica). Veremos cómo el Estado en los márgenes se construye y reconstruye permanentemente y en estos espacios se muestra con gran visibilidad su ubicuidad, reforzando modos diferentes de “estatalidad”. En particular, interesa mostrar el despliegue del Estado punitivo, al mismo tiempo que no se garantizan los derechos a la seguridad de los habitantes de estos barrios. Escapamos a las generalizaciones sobre violencia en los asentamienttos, evidenciando sus diferencias y matices, así como el rol de los medios de comunicación en los proceso de estigmación y asociación de ellos con la delincuencia. La metodología utilizada para este artículo se basa en la revisión de notas de campo de diferentes investigaciones en asentamientos informales (1986-2015) del AMBA y entrevistas a los habitantes, quienes desarrollaron relatos espontáneos en cuanto a la situación de seguridad en sus barrios.
