Description
Summary:The survey included 1,164 jails in 893 jurisdictions. Jails in 363 jurisdictions with large jail populations provided additional information on inmate deaths, jails under court order, and inmates held because of crowding elsewhere. Data include 1-day counts and average daily population by inmate legal status and sex for 1978, 1983, and 1984; detention status of adult inmates for 1978, 1983, and 1984; and number of inmates, rated jail capacity, and percent of rated capacity occupied for 1978, 1983, and 1984. Additional data indicate number of jails holding inmates for other authorities (Federal, State, local) and number of inmates so held for 1983 and 1984, number of jails under court order, and number and causes of inmate deaths 1983 and 1984. The report contains a narrative summary of the data. 5 suggested readings.
